Vincent van Gogh painted this self-portrait in 1889, after his left ear was severed. No one really know how that happened. Some historians say van Gogh lost his ear in a fight with his friend, Paul Gauguin. Others believe he cut his own ear off in a fit of madness. We may never know what really happened to Vincent van Gogh's ear.

ReplyDeleteI remember reading from a possibly unreliable source that van gogh apparently frequented brothels occasionally and lived with an "employee" of one once ha, but anyway i read that it is believed he cut of his ear to show his love for a woman, who may have been a prostitute. Not sure if it's true but I do love van goghs style of painting i feel he's very underrated
