Unicorn is found at the fountain

When I first saw this piece, I recognized the bottom half (with the lions, unicorn, fountain, rabbits & stag)  from the opening credits of the 1982 animated film, The Last Unicorn. The film is about a unicorn, the last of her kind, who goes on a journey to find out what happened to the rest of her species.

  1. So what do you think about the overall piece of art? Is it well rendered? Are there things that make you look further? What details interest you?

  2. To me, there is something off in this piece. I don't know if it is because it seems too crowded or something with the perspective isn't right, but it bugs me. Also when we went over it in class, I didn't realize how much symbolism could be fit into one piece of work. I would never think to look up other meanings of what the different animals mean, so I was surprised when we dissected it into its little hidden messages. Overall I think this is a well rendered piece, I like the colors and all the little details.

    1. I agree about it being cluttered. It seems a little more negative space would have allowed us to understand what the central focus was. What amazes me is that this is woven and not painted. What skill (and patience) that must have taken.
